요약 : The portrayal of conversations in Fontane's and Hofmannsthal's works seems to suggest that distorted communication is not always due to intrinsic features of language itself. Implied, rather, is that a lack of communication can sometimes be attributed to failure to fulfill ethical qualifications of human behavior conducted through the medium of language. Another implication in their work is that the immoral dispositions of character and ways of treating others, which are portrayed as disrupting the communicative process, are indicative of society's stage of historical development. Through a moral critique of distorted communication and through the positive portrayal of meaningful conversations, Fontane's and Hofmannsthal's works suggest an ethical model for successful communication which runs against the grain of modern society's influence on its members' character and behavior. The objective of the dissertation is to explore such a model as it is implied by Fontane and Hofmannsthal.
초록/해제
요약 : The ethical and social perspectives on the problem of communication which are suggested by the literary texts require greater theoretical clarification than the research on Fontane and Hofmannsthal has hitherto provided. The dissertation aims to provide such clarification through a discussion of work done by Erich Fromm, particularly his Haben oder Sein, and Jurgen Habermas, especially the development of his "theory of communicative action." In the course of discussion, theoretical frameworks are developed in order to interpret Fontane's and Hofmannsthal's texts from an explicitly defined perspective. The texts are interpreted here in light of, but not in service to, extra-literary theory.

요약 : The model is explored first through a critique of treating people like things in verbal interactions. This is seen in the texts as being motivated by a drive toward domination or control of others, due to either a possessive or a manipulative attitude towards them. These attitudes are viewed as being nurtured by a society which promotes a materialistic view of life directed toward personal success. The ethical conditions which make possible the successful conversations portrayed in the texts are then explored. Such qualities as altruism and empathy help to orient one towards understanding others and co-ordinating with them individually pursued plans of action.
