요약 : John Wesley's adaptation of the Prayer Book rites of infant and adult baptism in the Sunday Service of 1784 was the basis of subsequent revisions in the Methodist Episcopal Church (1784-1939), particularly in 1792, 1864, 1916 and 1932. The present dissertation examines these revisions in detail. The texts of the rites, including (where they exist) early proposed versions and unpublished sources, have been collected and compared; the meaning of the variations thus identified has been elucidated both by correlation with related sources (the Discipline, the General Conference Journal, the Daily Christian Advocate, contemporary writers) and through original analysis. This liturgical history has been situated within the context of larger historical and theological developments in American Methodism.

요약 : John Wesley's understanding of baptism and his revision of the Prayer Book rites were essentially orthodox, and the earliest changes to his Sunday Service rites do not reflect a low regard for the sacraments in early American Methodism. In terms of theological effect, the 1792 revision was relatively mild, but subsequent revisions were each more radical than the one before. Key factors in this history were an increasing emphasis on the subjective aspect of the sacrament, a growing reluctance to attribute original sin to children, and the unthinking adoption as church law of regulations pertaining to membership in the old Methodist societies. By 1932, the rites reflected an understanding of baptism which early Methodists would not have recognized as their own, and baptized children had been reduced to "preparatory members" awaiting full membership through another rite. Developments since 1939 in the Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church are noted as a partial retreat from this extreme.

요약 : The Methodist tradition underscores the necessity of fulfilling baptism in the growth and sanctification of the believer, with all that this implies in terms of ethical demands; this may serve as a valuable corrective to a more static conception of the sacrament. However, the same tradition suggests the danger of subordinating baptismal grace to human activity by such an approach.
