■520    ▼aOne  important  question  which  confronts  the  church  today  is,  "How  can  we  empower  persons  for  faithful  and  effective  Christian  discipleship?"  Discipleship  is  our  task  as  Christians,  but  amidst  the  pressures  and  the  complexities  of  today's  world  often  it  is  difficult  for  us  to  live  out  our  salvation  and  faithfully  use  the  grace  and  the  gifts  which  God  has  given  to  us.  This  project  considers  the  decline  of  discipleship  in  the  contemporary  American  church  and  suggests  the  use  of  a  small  group  experience  as  a  means  of  enabling  persons  within  El  Bethel  United  Methodist  Church  to  become  more  faithful  and  more  intentional  in  their  Christian  discipleship.  This  discipleship  group  was  based  on  John  Wesley's  class  meetings.  The  members  of  the  group  formulated  a  discipleship  covenant  which  consisted  of  a  list  of  specific  activities,  including  acts  of  piety  and  acts  of  mercy,  which  the  group  members  agreed  to  perform  as  an  expression  of  their  Christian  discipleship.  They  then  met  together  on  a  weekly  basis  for  a  period  of  three  months  in  order  to  share  with  each  other  the  ways  in  which  they  fulfilled  the  terms  of  the  covenant  and  to  consider  issues  that  arose  in  their  discipleship  experience.
