요약 : Since the early 19th century, the place of John Wesley (1703-91) in the Christian tradition has been investigated. However, the more scholars pressed their theories, the more complex the problem became. Furthermore, there is a dipolar tendency regarding the problem. Many insist, on the one hand, that Wesley's theology has a close affinity with Western theologies such as Continental Pietism, Lutheranism, Anglicanism, etc. On the other hand, it is argued that all of Wesley's heroes, from the age of Christian antiquity, are Eastern. Facing such a dipolar tendency a question arises: is Wesley's theology exclusively "either" Western "or" Eastern? The primary purpose of the dissertation, then, is to explore Wesley's historical place from both the perspectives of the Eastern and the Western theological traditions.
초록/해제
요약 : To engage fully in this study, it was necessary to examine anthropology which is central to Christian theology. Issues in this study are examined through the prism of the two patristic Fathers: Gregory of Nyssa, a figure representing the Eastern tradition of anthropology and Augustine, representing the Western tradition. In the first three parts, the ideas of Gregory, Augustine, and Wesley, regarding human nature and destiny, have been exposed through four stages of humanity--the primitive, the fallen, the restored, and the final stage. In the fourth part, Gregory and Augustine are first compared with one another, followed by a comparison of Wesley with each of them.
초록/해제
요약 : This research has eventually shown that Wesley's anthropology includes four distinct perspectives: both Gregorian and Augustinian, Gregorian but not Augustinian, Augustinian but not Gregorian, and neither Gregorian nor Augustinian but exclusively Wesleyan. In this light, it is erroneous to locate Wesley exclusively in either of the paradigms of the Western or Eastern traditions. Furthermore, from a perspective of Christian anthropology, it is also insufficient to call his theology "synthetic" or "eclectic" without precise justification. Rather, it is more appropriate to refer to his theology as "comprehensive," in the sense that it treats sources both of the Western and the Eastern traditions, inclusively, in a dialectic tension without losing the essential points of either tradition.
