■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  establishes  the  structure  and  internal  dynamics  of  agrarian  families  in  ancient  Israel  to  the  extent  that  this  information  is  revealed  in  biblical  legal  corpora.  It  begins  by  reviewing  the  histories  of  research  concerning  Israelite  kinship  and  biblical  law.  In  the  past,  Israelite  kinship  has  been  studied  both  synchronically  and  diachronically.  Synchronic  analyses  produce  a  composite  portrait  of  the  family,  irrespective  of  the  date  or  social  origin  of  written  sources.  Diachronic  studies  have  almost  always  focused  upon  specific  issues  of  kinship  during  a  short  period  of  Israelite  history.  Before  the  present  inquiry,  no  analysis  of  the  biblical  family  has  been  attempted  that  employs  contextual  or  environmental  parameters  rather  than  historical  periodization.
■520    ▼aFew  previous  full-scale  works  on  Israelite  kinship  have  dealt  specifically  with  biblical  law.  Those  that  do  typically  disregard  the  complex  relationship  between  this  literary  genre  and  actual  social  practice.  This  dissertation  explores  that  relationship  in  depth  along  with  methods  of  moving  from  normative  written  sources  to  the  realities  of  a  social  institution.  Chapter  two  examines  the  nature  of  the  available  sources  of  information  and  develops  the  methodology  employed  by  this  dissertation.  The  approach  adopted  here  combines  theories  and  data  from  the  social  sciences,  archaeology,  and  contemporary  biblical  scholarship.  Such  an  interdisciplinary  methodology  recognizes  the  incomplete  and  complex  nature  of  the  available  sources  pertaining  to  Israelite  kinship  customs  and  organization.
■520    ▼aChapters  three  and  four  use  archaeology  and  ethnographic  data  to  elucidate  the  form  and  functions  of  agrarian  families.  Chapter  three  reviews  the  language  employed  in  biblical  literature  to  signify  kinship  boundaries  in  Israelite  society.  Corporate  kinship  terms  are  examined  in  light  of  domestic  architecture  and  ethnographic  data  to  suggest  the  typical  family  organization  in  agrarian  contexts.  Chapter  four  examines  the  environment  in  which  agrarian  families  lived  and  worked.  It  also  considers  the  relationship  between  environmental  factors  and  the  basic  functions  performed  by  all  self-sufficient  farm  families.
■520    ▼aChapter  five  discusses  the  four  primary  collections  of  legal  materials  in  the  Hebrew  Bible  and  their  function  within  Israelite  society.  This  discussion  provides  the  basis  for  separating  ancient  traditions  from  the  social,  political,  and  religious  agendas  of  later  redactors.  The  family  laws  contained  in  each  of  these  corpora  are  examined  in  chapters  six  through  eight.  This  discussion  attempts  to  bridge  the  gap  between  biblical  sources  and  actual  practice  against  the  background  of  the  agrarian  family  that  was  established  in  chapters  three  and  four.
■520    ▼aThe  final  chapter  summarizes  the  results  of  this  study  and  considers  its  implications  for  the  agrarian  household  in  ancient  Israel.  It  also  discusses  the  obligations  and  privileges  that  biblical  laws  associate  with  various  family  roles.  The  thesis  is  argued  that  shared  goals  and  daily  tasks  result  in  a  profound  sense  of  interdependence  within  the  coresidential  kin  group.  What  conflict  does  exist  within  the  household  does  not  appear  to  fall  along  gender  lines,  as  is  often  argued.  Rather,  biblical  family  laws  reveal  a  larger  degree  of  intergenerational  conflict  and  power  differentials,  especially  among  male  household  members.  However,  because  the  family  was  not  a  static  institution,  an  individual's  rights  and  obligations  continue  to  shift  in  relation  to  other  family  members  during  the  life  cycle  of  the  kin  group.
