■520    ▼aJohn  Wesley's  (1703–1791)  explicit  appraisals  of  mystics  and  mysticism  warrant  a  new  consideration  of  the  authority  of  experience  for  his  theology.  The  dissertation  demonstrates  that  between  1736  and  1790  Wesley  consistently  criticized  mystics  as  unscriptural,  unreasonable,  poor  examples  of  Christian  life  who  rely  too  much  on  the  authority  of  their  experiences  for  their  religion.  Wesley  recognized  a  few  exceptions,  however.  The  dissertation  shows  how  exceptional  mystics  make  construing  the  authority  of  experience  in  Wesley's  theology  particularly  difficult.
■520    ▼aHampered  by  notions  of  mysticism  and  mystical  experience  alien  to  Wesley  (promulgated  originally  late  in  the  nineteenth  and  early  in  the  twentieth  centuries),  recent  scholarship  about  mystics  and  mysticism  as  a  focus  in  Wesley  studies  has  concentrated  on  other  aspects  of  the  topic:  mystical  experience  in  Wesley's  life  and  biography;  Wesley's  relation  to  traditions  of  mysticism;  and  doctrinal  conclusions  arising  in  concert  with  Wesley's  encounters  with  mystics.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  provides  a  close  reading  of  Wesley's  explicit  appraisals  of  mystics  and  mysticism  in  order  to  avoid  an  anachronistic  interpretation  of  the  topic.  The  dissertation  also  challenges  recent  renderings  of  the  whole  of  Wesley's  theology  insofar  as  they  regard  the  authority  of  scripture  as  always  superior  to  (Maddox,  Collins)  or  never  deeply  challenged  by  (Cobb)  the  authority  of  experience.  It  mitigates  against  the  view  (Runyon)  that,  for  Wesley,  experience  is  subject  to  a  test  from  scripture  within  a  Christian  community.
