Thesis (Ph.D.)--Luther Seminary, 2000.
초록/해제
요약 : This thesis explores the value of the classic Christian sexual ethic for modern societies. This ethic locates sexual intercourse in monogamous heterosexual marriage, obligates parents to care for their children, and prescribes celibacy for single adults.

요약 : Part One, Sex in the Single Society, documents the proportional demographic growth of single adults in advanced societies, traces the contemporary sexual behavior life course, explores recent sexual behavior customs, examines the evolution of marital and family structures, and evaluates both modern and postmodern sexual values. The processes by which the proportion of single adults in society has increased represents not only a demographic trend but a breakdown in the function of society to interpret and to structure life in such a way that people are able to effectively move through the life course, maturing in lifelong marriages and uniting the full sexual project in the family. Whether single or married, people remain “single” throughout their lives, cycling through immature sexual relationships and accessing sexual experience piecemeal, experiencing diminished benefits through human sexuality.

요약 : Part Two, Good Sex in the Single Society, distinguishes the Christian vision from external emphases which have corrupted its content (e.g., metaphysical dualism) and from internal abuses perpetuated by Christendom (e.g., sexual repression). In the Christian vision, people are viewed with ultimate value: created by God to live in relation with God, reconciled to God through Christ, and promised a resurrection unto everlasting life. In creating humans as embodied, sexual beings, God blessed them with personhood and community, investing both companionship and reproduction in the sexual relationship, and entrusting the nurture of children to their parents. The classical Christian sexual ethic interprets and structures human life in a way that fosters persons and builds community. Single adults experience a dilemma: attempt to access desired intimacy through genital encounter, becoming vulnerable to harm, or through social sexual experience, forgoing genital sex. A Christian vision promotes both celibate singlehood and faithful marriage as vocations by which people can advance society at the same time they live fulfilling lives.
