요약 : This study is an examination of the doxological texts in both German Pietist hymnody and Wesleyan hymnody, tracing the textual and doxological themes of John Wesley's hymns to the German Pietist hymns. Wesley's exposure to German Pietism and its literary materials played a significant role in his own development of hymnology and doxology through his personal exchanges, worship participation, and reading of Pietist literature and hymns. In all, Wesley translated thirty-three German hymns from the Moravian hymnal, Das Gesang-Buch der Gemeine in Herrn-Huth (1735), and the Freylinghausen hymnal, Geist-reiches Gesang-Buch (1704). Along doxological and literary lines, there are no significant parallels to be found in the English hymnody preceding Wesley, and only after his dynamic encounters with the Pietists and their unique hymn singing did Wesley begin writing his own hymns of a similar ethos. Through a comparative analysis of Wesley's actual translations with the original German texts, this study has documented the main parallels between German Pietist hymnody and Wesley's hymns as to the extensive use of language and phrases, theological and doxological themes, personal and private language, and the unique literary use of alliteration. The hymnic themes of personal piety, devotion, the religion of the heart, and the Christian life have been examined under the headings: assurance of forgiveness, salvific healing, love for Christ above all else, inner cleansing and purging, the melting of hearts (new birth), struggle and victory, sea themes, existence rooted in God, graphic suffering imagery, sexual allusions, and the use of personal pronouns. All of these were used extensively by John Wesley, and continued in subsequent Wesleyan hymnody by his brother Charles. In addition, Wesley's appropriation of German hymn tunes is examined through synoptic analyses and musical observations, showing another direct line of influence from German Pietist hymnody. Both the doxological and musicological parallels strongly suggest a direct influence from German Pietist hymnody, from which Wesley set up a framework for future evangelical hymnody that is practiced to this day.
