■520    ▼aVaughan  Williams'  Five  Mystical  Songs  is  a  practical  choice  for  performance  by  church  choirs  of  moderate  ability  and  size.  The  text,  taken  from  George  Herbert's  The  Temple,  is  rich  in  eucharistic  symbolism  and  is  set  sensitively  by  Vaughan  Williams,  making  this  piece  a  good  choice  for  theological  discussion  within  a  church  congregation.  However,  the  scoring  of  the  work  for  full  orchestra  poses  logistical  and  fiscal  problems  for  churches  of  moderate  ability  and  size.  Vaughan  Williams  himself  created  different  arrangements  of  this  work,  including  a  piano  reduction  of  the  score,  but  this  reduction  does  not  fully  capture  the  subtleties  of  orchestration.
■520    ▼aThe  creation  of  an  edition  of  this  work  that  served  both  the  artistic  demands  of  the  piece  as  well  as  the  budgetary  limits  of  the  church  allowed  the  work  to  be  presented  with  much  of  its  original  character  intact.  The  best  substitution  in  the  case  of  this  work  was  to  score  the  brass  and  woodwind  parts  for  organ,  retaining  the  harp,  timpani  and  strings.  The  organ  part  that  was  created  allowed  for  registration  on  the  basis  of  the  original  orchestration,  without  reference  to  specific  stops  that  would  vary  between  instruments.
