요약 : As we enter a period where decades of high levels of teacher attrition collide with a mounting teacher recruitment problem, leaders must recognize their roles in retaining America's teachers. Principals exert tremendous influence over the culture of their schools. School culture refers to the unwritten rules and traditions, norms, and expectations that seem to permeate everything: the way people act, how they dress, what they talk about, whether or not they seek out colleagues for help, and how teachers feel about their work and students. Certainly, some teachers leave the profession for reasons beyond the grasp of a building principal, but many of these could be sharply minimized if leaders begin to understand how the culture of a school impacts its faculty members.

요약 : This qualitative case study explored the cultures of several different schools, some coping with high teacher attrition, while others experience very low teacher attrition. In each school that was examined, every teacher was given the opportunity to contribute their perceptions of their school's culture to this research. Through the use of several different outlets including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, teachers were given the opportunity to voice their perceptions of the culture in their schools, resulting in an in-depth representation of four school cultures.
초록/해제
요약 : This research study is significant as it makes a connection between the culture of a school and its rate of attrition. When the culture of a school is positive, the results from this study indicate that teacher attrition is low. This is an important outcome as it strengthens the growing argument that educational leaders should examine their culture as a means of improving their schools. In addition, school principals must recognize the value and importance school culture plays in retaining their faculty.
