요약 : The task of teaching Christian ethics to new believers challenges contemporary churches. The difficulties of this are compounded by the complexities of attempting to do this cross-culturally. With traditional approaches often proving incapable of true life transformation, how can one effectively teach Christian ethics in cross-cultural settings? This dissertation argues that a pedagogy which evokes moral imagination facilitates the cross-cultural teaching of Christian ethics.

요약 : Chapter one investigates moral imagination. Looking to Jesus' use of metaphors and parables to communicate Christian ethics provides a helpful illustration of an approach which engages moral imagination. Philosophy provides a deep history for moral imagination as well. Its roots in the Classical Period develop during the Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary eras with the concept expanding from a basic understanding of imagination to a fully formed definition of moral imagination, which serves as the basis for its inclusion in pedagogies across various disciplines.

요약 : Chapter two proposes a contextualized approach to Christian ethics. Contextualization is an essential missiological principle. The teachings of Jesus and Paul provide powerful models of the contextualization necessary in communicating Christian ethics. Missiologists David Hesselgrave and Charles Kraft offer strategies for its implementation. Christian virtue ethics allows for the kind of contextualization needed in order to meet cross-cultural needs. Tracing virtue ethics from Paul through Thomas Aquinas to Stanley Hauerwas demonstrates its benefits in a variety of settings. The missiological imperative to disciple new believers easily synthesizes with virtue ethics, proving its usefulness in cross-cultural settings.

요약 : Chapter three explores the utilization of moral imagination in pedagogy. Several disciplines incorporate moral imagination into strategies for teaching ethics. These serve as examples for its use in teaching Christian ethics in cross-cultural settings. Chronological Bible storying, narrative preaching, and case studies are three specific methodologies which engage the moral imagination to teach Christian ethics cross-culturally.

요약 : The method of research for this project includes both primary and secondary materials. The Gospels and the life and teachings of Paul function as primary sources for biblical discussions of moral imagination and contextualization. Many philosophers' and theologians' works contribute to discussions of moral imagination, contextualization, Christian virtue ethics, and pedagogy.
