요약 : The aim of this dissertation is to construct a Reformed “missional” ecclesiology and practices for the Reformed Church in America (RCA). In the face of declining membership, inward focus and reduced funding to support mission and ministry, the General Synod of the RCA has devised and implemented a strategy for enabling denominational faithfulness, health, and growth. Centering this strategy is the development of a “missional” ecclesiology in which the chief mark of the church is identified as the whole people of God being sent into God's mission in local and global contexts. This ecclesiology is supported by a variety of “missional” practices for the RCA.
초록/해제
요약 : The dissertation begins with a case study of the RCA that explores its domestic missiology with focused interest on changes occurring during the period from 1994-2005. The case study is placed in dialogue with a description and Reformed critique of the North American missional church literature produced by the Gospel and Our Culture Network. The Network offers a contextual domestic missiology grounded in the missio Dei and definitive of the relationships between the gospel, church and culture. This perspective is then placed in dialogue with classical Reformed ecclesiology and the work of twentieth century Dutch Reformed theologian A. A. van Ruler toward the construction of a Reformed “missional” ecclesiology and practice.
초록/해제
요약 : The dissertation acknowledges that the North American missional church movement provides significant resources toward the development of a Reformed “missional” ecclesiology, but argues that classical Reformed ecclesiology, understood within a fully Trinitarian framework, provides broader foundations upon which to view the mission of the church within the mission of God. Key here is the pre-eminence of God's work in creation and what this continues to mean for persons, cultures and nations in relation to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ and the sanctifying labors of the Spirit in church and world. The study concludes that the sixteenth century Reformed marks of the church in combination with the marks of the Christian are fully missional and preserve the necessary bi-polarity of divine and human action within the mission of God.
