요약 : Most churches today have had or do have spoken, danced or sung drama as a vital part of their ministry. The question for today's congregations is not whether music drama is acceptable within the church edifice, but rather, which form of music drama is most appropriate to their particular congregation. It has long been established that music drama is an effective means of instruction and increasing attendance. Staged Historical Dramas set to music are a part of many churchs' regular holiday celebrations. Staging an oratorio is a well-structured form of this type of presentation.

요약 : Handel never staged his oratorios (sometimes called Historical Dramas) during his lifetime. There were scattered attempts at producing staged productions of several of his oratorios during the early part of the 19th century, some more authentically vigilant than others. The majority of the performances of Handel's oratorios during the 19th century offered massive choruses in concert form only. The vivid Historical Dramas which he composed became sanctimonius morality plays for and by the masses. Their was a revival of staged performances in Germany between 1920 and 1940. The majority of Handel scholars would prefer to see smaller scale, more vivid performances of one of his works rather than a massive, generalized presentation. Whether or not all of today's Handel scholars would prefer to see a staged or concert performances seems to depend more upon the quality of the production's ability to capture the true sense of the drama, rather than whether or not the venue is staged. Indeed, several authorities have commented positively regarding the illumination of the drama that they experienced while attending a staged performance.

요약 : There is no doubt that Handel was able to achieve a complete synthesis of drama and music in several of his oratorios based upon Old Testament subjects. Scholars agree that Handel evokes within the audience a desire to see the drama in physical form, whether abstract or concrete.
초록/해제
요약 : To demonstrate the validity and viability of the points mentioned above, I produced a fully staged production of Handel's Saul at the University of Redlands in October of 1997. A documentation of this production is included in this dissertation.
