■520    ▼aIn  Kung's  view,  papal  infallibility  is  a  stumbling  block  to  reuniting  separated  Christians.  He  considers  the  encyclical  Humanae  Vitae  as  an  indication  of  the  weakness  of  Roman  Catholic  theology.  Kung  prefers  indefectibility  over  infallibility  because  the  Church,  being  in  the  truth,  is  not  absolutely  dependent  on  definitive  infallible  propositions.
■520    ▼aKung  demands  that  the  critical  norm  of  the  Gospel  of  Jesus  Christ  is  the  one  to  test  and  prove  the  possibility  of  infallible  propositions.  The  Congregation  for  the  Doctrine  of  the  Faith  insists  that  the  teaching  office  of  the  Church  has  the  responsibility  to  interpret  the  word  of  God;  infallibility  serves  this  purpose.  Kung  protests  that  he  theologizes  within  the  Catholic  Church  and  that  his  theology  ministers  to  the  ecumenical  spirit  as  well.  In  Kung's  view,  God's  revelation  is  compatible  with  reason.  Karl  Rahner  warns  that  he  rationalizes  and  makes  the  Christian  faith  one  man's  subjective  interpretation.
■520    ▼aSince  Peter,  in  the  Roman  Catholic  view,  is  the  unshakable  foundation  of  the  Church,  as  the  leading  apostle  of  the  original  Church  and  his  successors  the  popes,  infallibility  is  essential  in  matters  of  faith  and  morals.  Catholic  theologians,  however,  explain  that  papal  infallibility  does  not  mean  that  the  pope  "receives  a  blank  check.".

■520    ▼aThe  foundations  of  Kung's  theology  of  the  teaching  authority  in  the  Church  are  scriptural.  In  his  view,  the  whole  Church  and  each  individual  member  share  in  the  apostolic  succession.  The  ecclesiastical  office  is  an  office  of  service.
■520    ▼aThe  introduction  of  sola  scriptura  as  the  only  criterion  of  Christian  Tradition  to  the  Eastern  Orthodox  is  unacceptable.  Kung  avoids  the  organic  complementary  unity  of  Scripture  and  Tradition.  Rejection  of  the  concept  of  infallibility  or  of  any  infallible  teaching  authority  in  the  Church  is  incompatible  with  the  presence  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  the  life  of  the  Church.
■520    ▼aThe  problem  of  the  dissertation  is  twofold:  first,  to  expound  Hans  Kung's  inquiry  and  his  contribution  to  the  debate  of  papal  infallibility,  and  second,  to  evaluate  it  from  an  Eastern  Orthodox  point  of  view.  Treatment  of  the  subject  is  irenic  and  ecumenical.
