초록/해제
요약 : As a pastor, I became convinced of the wisdom of this new trend and sought to provide the Session of my church with an educational experience which would enable them to focus upon the theological and developmental issues surrounding the issue of baptized children and the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. This project developed out of that desire.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter five is the evaluation. Its contents are derived from personal reflection, evaluations from the participants (both verbal and written) and the written evaluations of two neutral observers. Related issues were considered in chapter six: confirmation, children and the church, shared decision-making in the church and the Session. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.).
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter one focuses on the sacramental issues important to the project with emphasis placed upon the sacrament of baptism in the Reformed tradition and how it relates to growth in faith and sharing in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. A description of what I mean by faith and a survey of human development with special emphasis on faith development comprises chapter two.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter three focuses on the pastoral setting with attention given to the denomination's position, my own viewpoint, the Session's prior thinking on the issue, and the hypothesis of the project. The project itself is shared in chapter four.
초록/해제
요약 : First communion has had a checkered existence within the Christian community. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition it is administered immediately following infant baptism. The Roman Catholic tradition separates it from baptism and places it between the baptismal act and confirmation. The anabaptist wing of the Reformation has kept baptism and first communion together but held them both until a "believer's confession" could be made. The Presbyterian branch of the reformed tradition, along with many others, has participated in infant baptism and held first communion until confirmation and adult membership. With greater emphasis and thought being placed upon the meaning of baptism and membership in recent years and the growing awareness of the ways in which children develop Christian faith and commitment, there has been a growing trend in the Reformed tradition to open the sacrament of the Lord's Supper to baptized children prior to their confirmation.
