요약 : Only in the past decade has mutual dialogue between Christian ethics and psychology been carried out with any scholarly fervor. The dialogue has intensified with the emergence of Lawrence Kohlberg's work on moral development in the field of developmental psychology, James W. Fowler's cognitive-structural approach to the study of faith, and Stanley Hauerwas' ethic of character which shifts the focus of ethical discourse away from the moral decision to the moral agent.
초록/해제
요약 : The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to identify the dynamics and sharpen the focus of the current dialogue between Christian ethics and developmental psychology as typified in the thoughts and theories of Kohlberg, Fowler, and Hauerwas, (2) to offer a constructive analysis of Hauerwas' ethic of character on the basis of Kohlberg's and Fowler's theories. The works of these three men were analyzed on the basis of five critical issues in the study of moral development: (1) definitions of morality and the aims of moral development, (2) the formation and development of character, (3) the tension between structure and content, (4) the role of affectivity, and (5) the relationship between moral reasoning and moral behavior.

요약 : Three interrelated conclusions were drawn from the analysis. First, Kohlberg, Fowler, and Hauerwas maintain an interactionist understanding of the nature of the developing self. This common psychological factor provides a point of contact for meaningful dialogue and exchange between the disciplines of developmental psychology and Christian ethics. Second, Hauerwas' ethic of character is based upon a psychological interpretation of the self. This finding has two significant implications: (1) Hauerwas' ethic is open to scientific investigation and (2) his ethic provides a formal and universal account of moral development which incorporates religious content as a shaping influence in moral development. Third, Hauerwas' ethic presently is inadequate to give a full account of the nature of moral development because he fails to consider the cognitions necessary for the formation, interpretation, and assimilation of character, narrative, and vision.
