■520    ▼aThe  main  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  a  study  of  Barth's  biblical  exegesis  that  is  all  the  more  accurate  because  less  willing  to  account  for  the  exegesis  by  appeal  to  an  underlying,  systematic  hermeneutic.
■520    ▼aThe  study  is  divided  into  four  chapters,  each  approaching  the  corpus  of  Barth's  exegesis  from  a  particular  standpoint.  The  first  chapter  contains  a  description  of  the  function  of  the  biblical  text  in  Barth's  exegesis,  and  uses  for  this  purpose  the  concept  of  witness.  The  second  chapter  argues  for  a  particular  conception  of  the  Christological  focus  of  the  exegesis,  a  conception  which  stresses  the  presence  of  more  than  one  Christocentric  approach  in  the  exegesis.  The  third  chapter  studies  the  theological  context  of  Barth's  exegesis,  by  highlighting  the  presence  of  theological  pressures  on  the  exegetical  approach.  The  final  chapter  offers  a  comprehensive  presentation  of  Barth's  method  of  explication  of  the  biblical  text;  the  presentation  makes  use  of  the  categories  of  conceptual  analysis  and  narrative  reading  of  texts  to  argue  an  ultimately  pluralistic  description  of  Barth's  exegetical  method.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  offers  a  presentation  and  analysis  of  all  the  excursuses  containing  biblical  exegesis  in  volumes  I  and  II  of  the  Church  Dogmatics  of  Karl  Barth.  The  thesis  is  largely  descriptive  in  nature,  arguing  for  a  pluralistic  conception  of  Barth's  biblical  exegesis  that  seeks  not  to  reduce  his  approach  artificially.
