요약 : Chapter 1 outlined the scope and purposes of the study, and surveyed contemporary theological renderings of vocation. The chapter concluded that contemporary theological treatments of vocation often tied too closely vocation and work, or profession. A hypothesis was offered that the resources examined and method followed would lead to a dynamic pastoral theological understanding of vocation.

요약 : Chapter 2 examined the theological ethics of Stanley Hauerwas for contributions toward the pastoral theology of vocation. Particular attention was given to his emphases on character, narrative, community, and virtue. Areas were noted for continued dialogue between theological ethics and pastoral theology, both in methodological considerations and in the focus of vocation.

요약 : Chapter 3 studied the theological anthropology of James Loder. The chapter noted his development of an existential context for convictional experiences, and examined his understanding of the epistemological status and dynamics of transformation. Conclusions were noted for a pastoral theology of vocation, and implications noted for method in pastoral theology.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter 4 presented a case of pastoral counseling from the author's ministry. The case of Ellen was interpreted as a case in vocational discernment. The case material was presented in critical dialogue with the work of chapters 2 and 3 on Hauerwas and Loder, and conclusions noted for understanding vocation.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter 5 synthesized the material from the previous chapters in a pastoral theology of vocation. Conclusions for a pastoral theology of vocation were offered, including an existential context for understanding vocation and its relationship to self and role. An assessment was offered regarding the dialogue between pastoral theology and theological ethics.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation took the question of vocation, defined as "a purpose for being in the world related to the purposes of God," and studied it using a pastoral theological method. Principle resources for the study included the theological ethics of Stanley Hauerwas, the theological anthropology of James Loder, and a case of pastoral counseling.
