요약 : The purpose of this study was to develop new directions for pastoral care that are consistent with the theological trend in the Episcopal Church toward realizing the church as community. Although liturgical changes have been made to reflect this commitment, corresponding changes have not been made in pastoral theology and pastoral care. This study examined literature in the following areas: pastoral care and theology, the history of pastoral care, sociology, family systems, and contextual theory in an attempt to find resources for building community. Chapter One argues that pastoral care has been tutored by American individual psychology and traditions of rugged individualism and consequently has been dominated by an individual approach. Chapter Two traces the legacy of individualism in pastoral care through an examination of the Bible, the Anglican tradition, and in the American Protestant church. I found that the Bible does not reflect this sole preoccupation with the individual even though the classic texts of pastoral care often approach it in that manner. In addition, I argue that in adopting the individual approach to pastoral care we traded a Christian social ethic for an individualistic ethic. The individual approach to pastoral care is found wanting and consequently in Chapter Three I examine five family systems theories from an Anglican Christian perspective. Family systems theory in general and the contextual theory in particular were found to offer helpful insights into the dynamics of community life. Chapter Four argues that a reclamation of Christian social ethics is critical for the building and sustaining of Christian community. Social ethics serves as the bond that holds Christian community together. Finally, Chapter Five proposes a model for pastoral care grounded in the covenantal relationship we have with God and each other. That relationship is described by a trustworthiness arising out of a fair balance of give and take in relationships, responsible responding, and mutual care. The recommended model includes four dimensions: legacy (history and facts), individual psychology and spirituality, systems, and ethics. This model is then applied to several pastoral arenas: life cycle rituals, administration, and the church and the world.
