■520    ▼aI  began  this  project  by  first  selecting  a  group  of  individuals  from  among  the  membership  of  First  Christian  Church  who  had  expressed  an  interest  in  establishing  such  a  ministry  as  this  to  serve  as  an  advisory  committee.  The  committee  consisted  of  five  persons  and  myself.  Once  the  committee  was  formed,  we  began  meeting  on  a  regular  weekly  schedule.  The  next  phase  of  the  project  involved  the  planning  and  presenting  a  series  of  public  educational  sessions  followed  by  an  increased  involvement  with  the  activities  of  ministry  as  they  grew  out  of  our  increased  knowledge.
■520    ▼aIn  the  summer  of  1992  a  new  addiction  treatment  facility  opened  in  the  community  of  Girard,  Kansas.  Thus  an  opportunity  for  ministry  with  alcoholics  and  addicts  presented  itself  to  the  First  Christian  Church.  In  the  beginning,  the  project  was  simply  to  bring  the  Church  into  a  relationship  of  ministry  with  the  clients  and  staff  of  the  newly  opened  facility;  and  to  promote  an  awareness  of  the  needs  being  met  by  the  facility  among  the  people  of  Girard.  The  ministry  was  expanded  with  the  involvement  of  other  churches  and  organizations  in  the  community.  The  deeper  we  moved  into  this  project,  the  more  other  possibilities  opened  up.  Specifics  are  mentioned.
■520    ▼aThere  are  two  foundations  for  this  ministry  that  are  of  the  utmost  importance  for  us  to  understand  as  we  attempt  to  fulfill  our  calling  in  relationship  to  alcoholics  and  addicts.  These  are  the  theological  insights  that  are  necessary  for  the  people  of  the  Church  to  grasp  as  they  respond  to  God's  call  for  ministry  and  make  their  own  unique  contribution  to  it.  The  first  foundation  is  the  need  to  recognize  that  all  humans,  including  ourselves,  stand  in  the  need  of  God's  grace  and  redemption.  The  second  foundation  is  the  recognition  that  because  we  are  Christians,  everything  we  do  is  ministry.
