■520    ▼aExploring  the  teaching  of  the  Catholic  church  on  the  morality  of  slavery  in  theological  and  historical  context  is  the  purpose  of  this  dissertation.  The  moral  illegitimacy  of  slavery  is  a  near  universal  opinion  and  includes  among  its  adherents  the  Catholic  church.  How  the  church  got  to  this  position  and  what  the  church's  position  actually  is  are  explored.  While  focusing  on  the  pivotal  moment  of  the  doctrine  in  the  nineteenth  century,  the  study  grounds  itself  in  the  tradition  with  a  long  look  at  the  development  of  its  position  through  the  patristic,  medieval,  and  scholastic  periods.  Particular  attention  is  focused  as  well  on  theoretical  views  of  doctrinal  development  from  Newman  to  the  present.
■520    ▼aIn  moral  theology  the  church's  position  on  the  morality  of  slavery  often  serves  as  a  starting  point  for  a  larger  thesis  concerning  the  church's  ability  to  speak  relevantly  to  society.  The  allegation  that  the  church  reversed  its  position,  once  holding  slavery  permissible,  today  arguing  it  is  impermissible,  is  placed  into  a  larger  historical  context  than  usually  accompanies  these  allegations.  The  dissertation  is  not  an  apologia  for  the  church,  but  instead  an  exploration  of  the  limits  and  processes  of  doctrinal  development.  The  subtext  concerns  as  well  the  practice  of  moral  theology  in  a  postmodern  culture,  where  historicity  and  skepticism  seem  to  place  moral  absolutes  on  the  defensive.
