■520    ▼aThe  study  explored  the  effectiveness  of  the  mission  statement  within  five  Catholic  elementary  schools  in  the  Diocese  of  Springfield,  Illinois,  and  to  listen  to  the  "stories"  surrounding  the  awareness  of  its  contents,  the  process  used  in  developing  it,  the  effects  on  the  daily  decisions  made  by  pastors,  principals,  and  teachers  and  the  relationship  to  the  overall  educational  mission  of  the  Catholic  Church.  The  "stories"  revolved  around  three  basic  research  questions:  (1)  What  is  the  content  of  the  mission  statement?  (2)  What  was  the  process  used  in  developing  the  mission  statement?  and  (3)  How  does  the  mission  statement  influence  the  operation  of  the  school?  The  design  of  this  study  combined  multi-case  study  and  grounded  theory.  The  study  looked  at  five  independent  Catholic  School  Systems  by  examining  parent  newsletters,  faculty  bulletins,  and  mission  statements,  and  by  observing  the  school  climate,  and  by  interviewing  the  pastor,  principal,  teachers  and  parents.  Purposeful  sampling  was  used.  Schools  were  selected  because  they  are  Catholic  elementary  schools  (K--8).  Each  has  a  principal  and  a  pastor.  The  schools  are  located  in  both  rural  and  urban  settings  with  a  variance  in  size.  Inductive  analysis  was  used  for  analyzing  the  mission  statement,  interviews,  observations,  parent  newsletters,  and  faculty  bulletins.  Respondents  had  no  general  awareness  of  how  the  mission  statement  was  developed.  The  only  time  the  mission  statement  appeared  to  be  in  the  forefront  of  everyone's  mind  was  when  it  was  being  written  or  revised.  Even  though  the  respondents  had  not  looked  at  the  mission  statement  recently,  it  reflected  their  values  and  beliefs  as  to  the  mission  of  the  universal  Catholic  church  and  their  own  school's  mission.  Indirectly,  pastors,  principals,  teachers  and  parents  were  able  to  connect  a  variety  of  school  activities  and  classroom  practices  with  the  mission  statement.  Although  the  mission  statement  was  never  talked  about  or  used  directly  in  decision  making  or  curriculum  development,  the  majority  of  the  respondents  felt  it  was  vital  to  the  school.
