요약 : A surviving contract stipulates instructions for the papal series, indicating that it was recognized as an important part of the chapel's fresco program. Yet today, the images are overlooked by visitors and scholars alike because of Michelangelo's frescoes (astounding examples of western art, but disruptive of the original fresco program); the once-dirty state of the frescoes; the majestic rhythm of the portraits deemed repetitive by modern eyes accustomed to novelty; and our loss both of the late-fifteenth-century sense of these images as portraits and of the clear messages woven into their frescoed vestments.

요약 : Bearing shimmering chasubles, copes, and triregna, the popes stand as sole intermediaries between heaven and earth, their saintly dynasty continuous and unbreakable. In the Sistine Chapel, the papal portraits form the fulcrum for Sixtus' claim to preeminence as Legislator, Ruler, and Priest.

요약 : My goals are two-fold: to create much-needed connections between art, liturgy, and costume---bringing some elements under the art historical lens for the first time---and to restore to the popes their key role in Sixtus' frescoed program. Firsthand examination of the frescoes and restoration documents, and contemporary vestments, texts, liturgy, and literature, allows me to propose a reconstruction of the original state of the lost altar wall and lunette frescoes; to uncover the proclamations of papal preeminence over the interlocking spheres of secular and sacred life woven into the popes' frescoed vestments; and to reveal the contemporary understanding of the papal images as "portraits" emphatically embodied through liturgy, realism, and physiognomy.

요약 : The Sistine Chapel, built in the late-fifteenth-century under Sixtus IV, provided the foremost site for papal worship and election. Witnessed by cardinal and king, the frescoes of Sixtus' chapel expressed his assertions of preeminent religious and theocratic power. Encircling the horizon of the chapel's original blue starry sky, a unique papal portrait series painted by Botticelli, Ghiriandaio, and Rosselli typified these assertions. The series singularly combined classical and Early Christian elements to embody an immortal succession of saintly, papal Famous Men, culminating in Sixtus on the throne.
