■520    ▼aFollowing  the  Second  Vatican  Council,  the  magisterial  teaching  of  the  Catholic  Church  began  to  invoke  the  language  of  social  sin  in  an  effort  to  describe  and  confront  manifestations  of  sin  in  social  systems  and  structures.  This  dissertation  explores  the  significance  of  the  usage  of  this  language  in  official  Church  teaching  documents  with  a  view  to  addressing  two  central  theological  issues.  First,  the  question  of  whether  magisterial  use  of  this  term  constitutes  a  development  in  Catholic  doctrine  is  considered.  Secondly,  as  the  theological  counterpart  of  sin  is  grace,  this  work  seeks  to  relate  the  concept  of  social  sin  to  social  forms  of  reconciliation.  Recognition  of  structural  forms  of  sin  invites  consideration  of  the  ways  in  which  human  communities  might  be  healed  of  such  divisions.  To  this  end,  ecclesial  understandings  of  sacramental  reconciliation  are  discussed  in  relation  to  contemporary  examples  of  extrasacramental  social  reconciliation,  with  particular  attention  given  to  the  phenomenon  of  the  truth  commission.
