요약 : Finally, this study will discuss the crisis within the Johannine community that necessitated the writing of the Prologue. The most likely context for the writing of the Prologue is the docetic division within the Johannine community. According to this study, the Prologue is a response to the docetic "heresy" within the community in terminology that would explain to a Hellenistic audience the reality of the Redeemer's humanity.

요약 : There is also evidence that the Gospel and 1 John are witnesses to a developing Logos Christology. The Gospel establishes the position of the Logos as the object of faith while the First Epistle moves toward making Logos a title for Jesus. The Prologue, the last to be composed in this series, represents the final stage of this tradition. Only in the Prologue does the term Logos become an independent title for Jesus. This developing Logos Christology of the Gospel and 1 John are a witness to the association that will be made between the Logos and Jesus Christ.

요약 : This study is an attempt to advance a new paradigm for understanding the Prologue of the Gospel of John. First, the categories that have been developed over the last century for interpreting the Prologue are discussed. This discussion includes the position of the post-Bultmannian era that the Prologue is based in part on a hymn. In discussing these categories of interpretation, this study concludes that there is evidence for a new interpretation for the Prologue of John. Second, in addressing this possibility, this study will suggest that the Prologue of John represents a special case of the journey of the soul modeled on Stoic Logos terminology. This study demonstrates that the author of the Prologue intentionally incorporated previously existing Stoic concepts concerning the Logos. This terminology was subsequently grafted into the story of the journey of the soul. In this manner the author could speak of the incarnation of Jesus Christ in language that was acceptable to a Hellenistic audience. The audience could identify with the figure of the Logos and at the same time make the connection between the Logos and Johannine Redeemer.
