■520    ▼aIn  some  circles  in  the  American  Catholic  Church,  there  seems  to  be  a  revival  of  the  more  traditional  homiletic  method.  There  are  two  reasons  for  this  revival.  First,  there  are  the  fears  of  what  some  church  leaders  have  called  a  "hollowing  out"  or  "thinning"  of  Catholicism.  A  New  York  Times/CBS  News  poll  in  April  1993  revealed  some  startling  statistics  (Waznak,  1993).  Almost  two-thirds  of  American  Catholics  believe  that  during  Mass  the  bread  and  wine  can  best  be  understood  as  "symbolic  reminders  of  Christ"  rather  than  as  actually  being  changed  into  Christ's  body  and  blood.  When  asked  if  someone  could  be  a  good  Catholic  if  he  or  she  did  not  believe  that  Jesus  was  the  son  of  God,  17  percent  of  young  Catholics  (18--29  years  of  age)  said  yes.  When  the  same  group  was  asked  if  someone  could  be  a  good  Catholic  if  he  or  she  practices  birth  control,  98  percent  responded  affirmatively.  Such  statistics  have  caused  some  worried  church  leaders  to  signal  a  return  to  the  instructional  sermon  at  Mass.  The  reasoning  is  that  Mass  time  is  the  only  time  to  reach  most  of  the  people  with  church  teaching.
