■520    ▼aThis  exploratory  study  examined  the  obstacles  to  the  marketing  of  pastoral  counseling.  Particular  emphasis  was  placed  on  the  definition  of  a  pastoral  counselor  as  a  prominent  member  of  the  mental  health  profession;  the  distinguishing  components  of  pastoral,  Christian,  and  biblical  counseling;  and  the  marketing  and  promotional  activities  of  pastoral  counselors.  Data  were  collected  from  67  subjects  affiliated  with  12  religious  denominations  and  consisting  of  22  opinion-makers,  22  counselors,  and  23  clerics.  Clerics  considered  the  professionally  trained  pastoral  counselor  to  be  the  most  qualified  provider  of  pastoral  counseling  with  themselves  closely  following.  Although  the  clerics  considered  themselves  to  be  among  the  leading  providers  of  pastoral  counseling,  many  could  not  clearly  classify  their  activities  into  pastoral  care  versus  pastoral  counseling.  The  pastoral  counselors  highly  agreed  that  the  pastoral  counselor  is  always  a  professionally  trained  clinician,  but  the  opinion-makers  and  clerics  disagreed.  None  of  the  subjects  could  agree  on  how  to  distinguish  pastoral,  Christian,  or  biblical  counseling,  yet  the  counselors  self-identified  variously  as  pastoral,  Christian  or  biblical  counselors.  Counselors  reported  employing  very  few  proven  marketing  activities  yet  expressed  a  strong  desire  for  knowledge  in  that  area.  They  reported  past  clients  as  their  primary  business  source,  followed  by  clergy  referrals.
