■520    ▼aThis  thesis  is  a  study  of  covenant  theology  in  Scotland  and  how  it  articulated  a  particular  notion  of  Scottish  nationalism  in  the  seventeenth  century.  The  group  of  ministers  who  developed  this  theology---connected  by  education,  friendship,  and  marriage---argued  against  multiple  rival  narratives  to  define  Scotland  as  the  elect  Protestant  nation.  Through  a  focus  on  sermons,  it  shows  how  these  arguments  were  developed,  particularly  in  1638  in  building  support  for  the  Scottish  covenant.  There  were  multiple  ways  in  which  the  nation  was  viewed  and  understood  in  seventeenth  century  Scotland.  Nations  are  constructed  over  periods  of  time  and  reconstructed  again  making  them  episodic.  Hence  the  Scottish  ministers,  constituting  a  very  small  group,  promoted  a  covenantal  concept  of  the  nation  that  fit  into  their  understanding  of  elect  nationhood  and  persuaded  others  to  envision  the  nation  through  their  sermons.  The  ministers,  however,  were  not  the  only  ones  to  create  national  identity  and  the  challenges  they  faced  against  rival  identities  often  caused  them  to  push  their  covenantal  cause  further.  Thus  the  nation---and  what  the  ministers  meant  by  it---at  1560  would  differ  than  it  would  at  1638  and  change  again  when  confronted  by  the  potential  for  a  union  with  England  in  the  1640's.  Understanding  this  strand  of  Scottish  nationalism  helps  explain  some  of  the  tensions  between  English  and  Scottish  preachers  in  the  Westminster  Assembly,  and  the  divisions  that  arose  over  the  concept  of  election  and  the  failure  of  the  Solemn  League  and  Covenant.
