요약 : A common goal among all Churchmen was to have a singing congregation. In connection with this goal, the Church struggled to improve the texts of her psalms and hymns. The hopes on the one hand and the fears of change on the other so vividly recorded in the periodicals makes the 19th century Churchmen come alive again. Likewise the hope for a book of authorized tunes, appeared about mid-century and was not resolved until the 1870s.

요약 : As a spring-board for discussions of the various chapters, the rubric (a binding directive) written for the new American Prayer Book has been used. Preceding the psalms and hymns, it deals primarily with the responsibilities of clergymen in regard to music and musicians. He must, with musical assistance, oversee the selection of tunes, must prevent any "light and unseemly" music from being sung or played, and must prevent any indecency or irreverence on the part of the musicians themselves, who were often regarded as "vain and ungodly." In many instances however, clergymen were either incapable or disinterested in following the rubrical recommendations, and the musicians with no training or interest in Church music, saw the Church service as a vehicle for their own advancement as "entertainers." Periodicals were filled to overflowing with articles and letters from concerned Churchmen who longed for true ecclesiastical Church music and communicant musicians.

요약 : Churchmen Concerned is a study of the attitudes held by clergy and laymen of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in regard to music for their stated services. Though the principle source material has been derived from Episcopal periodicals, 1804-59, this has been supplemented by official and unofficial records of the Church. Most of the material therefore was writen from viewpoints of clergy and/or laymen, rather than musicians.

요약 : The growth of choirs, and especially of vested male choirs became quite noticeable in the 1850s along with serious study of ecclesiology stimulated by English and continental influences. Gothic arches and chancel choirs which chanted psalms in prose rather than in rhyme became a sought-after ideal on the part of concerned Churchmen.
