■520    ▼aBelieving  that  Christology  forms  the  center  of  Bonhoeffer's  theology  and  provides  the  basic  orientation  to  his  entire  theological  stance,  this  dissertation  examines  in  greater  detail  the  emergence  and  development  of  the    theologia  crucis  in  Bonhoeffer's  theology,  beginning  with  a  description  of  the  foundations  of  Bonhoeffer's  Luther  interpretation.  This,  in  turn,  is  followed  by  a  brief  review  of  Luther's  theologia  crucis  and  early  20th  century  Luther  interpretation.  The  body  of  the  paper  examines  Bonhoeffer's  Christology  and  theology  in  light  of  an  emerging  "cross  of  reality."
■520    ▼aBy  using  the  "theology  of  the  cross"  as  a  hermeneutical  key  into  Bonhoeffer's  theology,  not  only  are  we  able  to  establish  the  extent  of  Luther's  influence  on  and  the  resulting  Lutheran  character  of  Bonhoeffer's  theology  but  also  see  how  Bonhoeffer's  conversation  with  his  teachers  and  contemporaries,  Karl  Holl  and  Karl  Barth  in  particular,  develops.
■520    ▼aThe  method  is  will  be  one  of  by  combining  a  systematic-comparative  analysis  of  common  themes  in  Luther's  and  Bonhoeffer's  Christology  with  a  historical-developmental  explication  of  these  themes  in  Bonhoeffer's  theology.  The  historical  perspective  will  be  utilized  in  analyzing  the  development  of  Bonhoeffer's  Christology,  both  within  the  context  of  his  own  theology  and  the  theological  context  of  his  day.
■520    ▼aThis  essay  represents  a  critical  investigation  into  Dietrich  Bonhoeffer's  interpretation  and  use  of  Luther's  theology  in  shaping  his  Christology,  with  a  view  towards  providing  a  fresh  perspective  on  Bonhoeffer's  own  theology.  This  will  be  done  by  using  the  "theology  of  the  cross,"  a  term  generally  linked  to  Luther's  theology,  as  a  key  to  understanding  the  characteristic  elements  that  make  up  Bonhoeffer's  theology;  his  use  of  Luther  separates  him  from  both  his  teachers  and  his  contemporaries,  giving  his  theology  an  independent  character.  That  this  is  a  legitimate  manner  of  departure  will  be  seen,  even  though  the  term  is  not  one  that  Bonhoeffer  himself  uses.
