요약 : As an alternate means for understanding John 9, the readings of John 9 by four premodern Christian exegetes are examined. This survey yielded a number of exegetical insights regarding the place of John 9 within the Gospel context, its narrative rhetoric, and its figural dynamic. Using the premoderns' observations as a point of departure, I argue that the composition of John 9 resembles the ancient rhetorical pattern of argument associated with the complete argument, expolitio, and chreia elaboration. John 9 interweaves epideictic and forensic interests to demonstrate what it is for Jesus to be the Light of the World. The argument has been expressed in a figural, symbolic manner, which is characterized by a dynamic between the literal/physical and the figural/spiritual. The narrative rhetoric of John 9 shows that Jesus, not the Johannine community, is the principal object of John's theological presentation. The figural dynamic requires one to see the figural/spiritual in and through the literal/physical. The figural dynamic proceeds from faith in the Incarnation by which one recognizes Jesus as the revelation of God in the flesh.

요약 : In History and Theology in the Fourth Gospel, J. Louis Martyn argued that the Fourth Gospel has been composed as a two-level drama, whereby the Gospel narrative tells the stories of Jesus and the Johannine community at the same time. Martyn reads the Gospel at two levels to reconstruct the history of the Johannine community, which in turn is used as a hermeneutical key for understanding John's theology.

요약 : Martyn's hypothesis has come under increasing criticism in recent years. One hermeneutical critique is that Martyn's two-level reading strategy is allegory. While this critique is perceptive, its current formulation suffers from several deficiencies. By reframing the allegory critique in terms of Christian figural reading to remedy these deficiencies, a comparison of the reading strategies of Martyn and Augustine suggests that the two-level reading strategy is a kind of figural reading, not historical reconstruction. Recognition of this category mistake opens the interpretive space to consider alternate ways of understanding John 9 and John's theology without using the reconstructed community history as a hermeneutical key.
