■520    ▼aThis  descriptive  study  examined  parental  expectations  in  an  independent  school  in  a  mid-sized  southern  city.  Research  pointed  to  parental  involvement  as  a  factor  in  successful  schools.  The  parents  in  the  school  at  the  time  of  this  study  were  surveyed  to  determine  expectations  toward  aspects  of  the  education  of  their  children  and  looked  at  some  factors  of  involvement.  Some  of  the  findings  pointed  to  high  expectations  for  postsecondary  levels  of  schooling  for  children,  along  with  an  emphasis  on  completion  of  assignments  and  the  achievement  of  high  grades.  Because  the  school  was  parochial  in  nature,  the  highest  expectation  on  the  part  of  the  parents  was  for  the  school  to  fulfill  its  religious  mission  and  purpose  with  the  students.  A  safe  environment  and  strong  academic  expectations  were  high,  as  well,  which  tracked  research  in  the  field  of  parental  expectations.  Some  of  the  items  that  pointed  toward  involvement  were  as  follows:  (a)  parents  expected  the  communication  level  to  be  high;  (b)  parents  were  willing  to  volunteer  and  become  involved  in  various  programs  of  the  school;  and,  perhaps  the  most  notable  factor,  (c)  parents  involved  themselves  in  the  lives  of  their  children  in  educational  activities  outside  the  school.
