- 요약 : Based on Thomas Aquinas's thought on the theological virtues as found in the Summa theologiae, this study develops a regulative religious epistemology that outlines a specifically Christian response to situations of religious doubt. The doubt arises from two sources of epistemic challenge. One source is intellectual in nature. Here the study asks, How does a religious believer shaped and guided by the virtue of faith respond to situations of intellectual challenge? The other source is existential. How does a religious believer shaped and guided by the virtue of hope respond to situations of inscrutable suffering? The last of the theological virtues, love, is examined in terms of its paradoxical role in making suffering worse while providing strength to the sufferer.

- 요약 : In defending a realist account of theological virtues the study answers philosophical and theological critics of virtue ascription. Some contemporary philosophers deny virtues as true character ascription; some theologians reject the use of virtue language to describe matters of religious faith. The study addresses these concerns.

- 요약 : In developing a Thomistic regulative epistemology the study also places its contribution within contemporary discussions in analytic philosophy of religion and epistemology. How this Thomistic account differs from other epistemic accounts is critically explored, particularly with respect to evidentialism (Swinburne), proper functionality (Plantinga) and Wittgensteinian descriptivism (D. Z. Phillips).

- 요약 : Lastly, this study examines the formative, root contexts for the theological virtues. For the individual Christian this context is Trinitarian spirituality. For the gathered community of the faithful the context is Trinitarian ecclesiology. What is the relationship between Trinitarian spirituality and the theological virtues? What relevance does this relationship have with respect to addressing epistemic challenge and religious doubt? What is the relationship between Trinitarian ecclesiology and the theological virtues? What implications can we draw from such an ecclesiology as applied to epistemic challenge and religious doubt?
