요약 : Because historical evidence of Augustine's direct influence upon Kierkegaard is wanting (e.g., there is no admission by Kierkegaard that he read, or was influenced by, the Confessions), a comparative approach can be attempted to discern a significant thematic resonance of Augustine in Kierkegaard. It can be conjectured that Kierkegaard might have been assisted in his own historical 'task' by reading the Confessions. Kierkegaard's concern for Christianity as an "existence communication" and the difficulty of the "eternal decision" (to have faith) possibly demonstrate a relationship with the author of the Confessions. Common existential themes suggest both a literary kinship as well as historical utility on Kierkegaard's part. The most indicative resonance of Augustine in Kierkegaard is in their exhaustive examinations of despair [fortvivlelse] (which Kierkegaard also defines as "sin").
초록/해제
요약 : The Danish philosopher, theologian and notorious malcontent, Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), made it his "task" to "reintroduce Christianity into Christendom," that is, into nineteenth century Denmark in particular. Kierkegaard openly lamented what he perceived as the misidentification of Christianity with bourgeois humanism, speculative philosophical thought and nominal religious affiliation. Kierkegaard argued that this 'reintroduction' would require the communication of an understanding of Christianity as pathos, struggle and inwardness, that is, something 'existential.'.
초록/해제
요약 : While Kierkegaard may have received insight into this task from a wide variety of sources, there is good reason to think that the Confessions of Augustine (354-430) were valuable to his project. Kierkegaard admitted, within his journals and papers, that he admired Augustine's 'reduplication' (his ability to live as he wrote). Kierkegaard also appreciated Augustine's "plain speaking" on the matter of Christian suffering when attempting to follow 'the prototype' (Christ). Kierkegaard was further in agreement with Augustine that the 'perfection' in Christian truth is found in its divine authority, which counters "philosophers' doubt.".
