■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  argues  that  most  recent  Catholic  writing  on  war,  whether  in  official  Church  documents  or  in  the  work  of  theologians  and  other  writers,  makes  assumptions  about  the  origins  of  war  drawn  from  ideas  in  modern  political  thought  that  were  developed  consciously  in  contrast  to  the  Christian  tradition  and  have  been  explicitly  rejected  in  general  terms  by  Catholic  thinkers  themselves.  Therefore,  this  dissertation  looks  to  the  Christian  tradition,  spanning  from  the  Bible  and  the  Church  Fathers  to  the  Counter-Reformation  period,  for  insights  into  a  Christian  perspective  on  the  origins  of  war,  and  then  draws  on  recent  Catholic  theology  and  the  approach  to  international  relations  theory  known  as  constructivism,  to  develop  a  contemporary  Catholic  approach  to  understanding  the  origins  of  war  that  avoids  the  drawbacks  of  those  approaches  common  in  the  writings  of  recent  Catholic  thinkers.
