■520    ▼aChapter  1  introduces  the  significance  of  almsgiving  for  the  contemporary  problem  of  ministering  to  the  poor  effectively.  The  practice  of  almsgiving  was  initiated  by  God  as  a  part  of  His  missionary  concern  for  the  world.  The  practice  reached  its  apex  at  the  end  of  the  fourth  century  in  the  increasingly  Christianized  Roman  Empire,  but  began  to  wane  in  the  centuries  that  followed.
■520    ▼aChapter  2  deals  with  a  number  of  important  precursory  issues  to  the  discussion  of  almsgiving  in  the  view  and  practice  of  JCh  in  Antioch.  This  includes  a  biographical  section  on  JCh,  description  of  primary  and  secondary  sources  used  throughout  the  study,  and  a  definition  of  almsgiving  according  Scripture.  This  chapter  also  contrasts  the  views  of  Chrysostom  to  those  of  the  Social  Gospel  Movement  and  Liberation  Theology  in  Latin  America.
