요약 : Chapter Five shows that John's Gospel needs to be understood as "performance literature" in its predominantly oral culture. In particular, it is emphasized that John's Gospel as "performance literature" would probably have been experienced in its entirety by the [collective] audience. Hearing the Gospel as a whole reinforces the rhetorical impact of the term truth because truth and its cognates are pervasive throughout the Gospel. It can be fully perceived only when hearing the Gospel in its entirety. Chapter Six argues that these trial-like scenes present throughout John's Gospel serve as narrative analogues designed to support audiences in similar situations in their actual context of the late first-century Ephesus. The extensive nature of the trial motif in the Gospel of John reflects something of these tensions. Jesus himself as a character and sometimes other characters as well are regularly placed in situations of interrogation, culminating in the trial of Jesus before Pilate. This persistent trial motif likely reflected in some way the struggles of the Johannine audiences in Ephesus for whom the Gospel was performed. In addition, the overall narrative of the Gospel of John is a cosmic trial about Jesus and the truth he proclaims. The concept of "truth" as an expression of their alternative world strengthens audiences in their commitment to be faithful to Jesus in these contexts. Noticeably, in John's Gospel narrative truth retains legal dimensions. Truth itself is a legal term in its Old Testament background. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

요약 : Chapter One sets first century Ephesus and the potential conflicts there as a context for performances of John's Gospel.

요약 : Chapter Three shows that various counter-imperial features are detected in John's Gospel. John's Gospel is full of the "kingship motif;" and John presents Jesus as the figure retaining a "kingship" that does not originate from this "world." John also presents several "sign narratives" in which the sovereignty of Jesus is revealed as a great benefactor in relation to wine, bread, water, healing capability, and life. For the residents and subjects living in first century CE Ephesus, they would have known such a great benefactor as the Roman emperor. As such, John's Gospel is laden with counter-imperial features if one considers its socio-political as well as its literary context carefully.

요약 : Chapter Two shows how plausible it is to think that stress and tensions likely existed and that they created a fearful atmosphere in imperial Ephesus with all the groups who had a stake in seeing that groups like the Johannine communities did not cause trouble. John's community lived in tension with three different but interrelated groups: the Jewish community in Ephesus, the local municipal authorities in Ephesus, and the Roman provincial forces present in this capital of the province of Asia Minor. These interrelated tensions all have their roots in the dominating presence of the Roman Empire as a whole and its pervasive influence. Because of the nature of the patron-client interactions upon which the relationships of the empire were construed, the local Jewish authorities and the local municipal authorities did not want to be perceived as doing anything to challenge Roman imperial rule. Hence, when a minor group within their midst, such as the Johannine community, gives exclusive allegiance to a Son of God other than Caesar and proclaims a concept of truth other than the imperial mess
