요약 : Chapter (1) argues for the viability and promise of a trinitarian construal of Calvin's view of the divine-human relationship. Chapter (2) demonstrates the significance of the Trinity for Calvin's larger theology, through a historical examination of his articulation of this doctrine in the context of the trinitarian controversies of his ministry. Chapter (3) examines the way biblical and catholic priorities interact in Calvin's distinctive formulations of the doctrine of the Trinity.

요약 : Dialectical interpretations of the Reformation's understanding of the divine-human relationship--rooted in 19th century theological assumptions--have obscured the prominence of the doctrine of the Trinity as a paradigm for this relationship in John Calvin's Christian vision. The present study calls attention to this paradigm in a reconsideration of Calvin's understanding of the divine-human relationship.

요약 : Part III, "The Trinity and the Visibility of Grace," traces Calvin's articulation (Book IV, 1559 Institutes) of the concrete practical implications of his trinitarian paradigm for the divine-human relationship. There, God's trinitarian communication of divine grace to human beings takes visible expression in the corporeal context of the church. As the matrix of the divine-human relationship, the visible church (7) reflects the contextuality of God's trinitarian communication of divine grace; in particular in its worship in Word and sacrament, and in its organismic character. Baptism (8) visibly reflects the comprehensiveness of a trinitarian understanding of the divine-human relationship, as it is refracted into belief, worship, and Christian practice. Likewise, the Eucharist (9) visibly reflects the trinitarian communion with Christ which is the coherence of the divine-human relationship.

요약 : The second part of the study is a constructive exposition of the significance of Calvin's trinitarian theological paradigm for his understanding of the divine-human relationship. Thus chapters (4)-(6) follow the economic-trinitarian structure of Books I-III of the 1559 Institutes, tracing thematically the way in which Calvin's trinitarian paradigm is developed and emerges respectively as the basis (providing authentic knowledge of the divine nature through revelation), pattern (restoring the relationship broken by sin and the fall), and dynamic (divinely enabling human response) of God's relationship with humanity.
