요약 : Pluralists, by employing elements shared with the theology of the history of religions to different ends, show a problem with Pannenberg's response to the epistemological crisis (Section II.A). We argue that the problem can be met by rationally reconstructing Pannenberg's theology of religions in a "nuanced internalist" manner, i.e. commencing from the unique finality of Jesus Christ. By drawing on such philosophical treatments of tradition as Gadamer's and MacIntyre's, and by rejecting foundationalism yet retaining "contestability" as an element of rationality, we can construe theologies of religions as "retrospective narratives" explaining alien claims and the Christian tradition's epistemological crisis (II.B.).

요약 : Such theologies are traditionary enterprises maintaining the unique salvific finality of Jesus Christ, and are concerned with developing narratives generated by the biblical metanarrative. They conform to a common pattern we call the "final primacy" of Jesus Christ. Pannenberg's reconstructed theology of religions conforms creatively to this pattern (II.C.).

요약 : The argument of Section I is that the deep structure of Pannenberg's system consists of an "anthropological movement," beginning with foundational claims about the human person, and a "doxological movement," beginning with God's saving acts anticipating the consummation (I. A.). The system seeks a "fit" between these movements. In his "theology of the history of religions" (part of the "anthropological movement"), Pannenberg argues that Christianity embodies that openness to the future for which all religions strive (I.C). He thereby presents, in effect if not intention, an emended "absolute religion" argument of the kind which, partly under Hegelian influence, was once widespread in liberal Protestantism but has been largely abandoned since Troeltsch. Latent in Systematic Theology is a "doxological" assessment whereby the religions brokenly anticipate the Christian revelation (I.D.). This has affinities to Patristic themes and may be appropriately called the "theology of the divine economy." The question of the salvific finality of Jesus Christ provokes disharmony between these movements.

요약 : This dissertation is the first extended study of the theology of religions of Wolfhart Pannenberg, whose work in systematic theology is the most massive and many-sided of any living theologian. This theme is important to him. He shares the widespread view that the contemporary debate over the relationship of Christian theology to other religious traditions represents an "epistemological crisis" (A. MacIntyre) calling into question the very possibility of a Christian theology, and his contribution to the discussion is extensive.
