요약 : In today's society, many athletes are turning to faith for answers to life's questions. Moreover, prayer and/or spiritual rituals are becoming common place for athletes before, during, and after sporting contests. However, as Eitzen and Sage (1993) point out, very little is known about how and why athletes use prayer in conjunction with their sport participation. What appears to be lacking the in the current sport psychology literature is a systematic examination of the Christian athlete's lived experiences of prayer in sport. Thus, the present study was designed to examine this phenomenon by obtaining a first person perspective of the Christian athlete's lived experiences of several Christian athletes. Nine former Division I collegiate Christian athletes were interviewed and asked to describe their experience of praying before, during, or after competition. These interviews were transcribed and analyzed using phenomenological methods outlined by Henderson (1992). The results revealed four themes that seemed to characterize these athletes' experiences of praying in sport: Performance Prayers, Prayer Routine, Thankfulness , and God's Will. The theme of Performance Prayers had three subthemes: Coping with Stress, Praying for Safety, and Praying to Play to the Best of Ability. The theme of Prayer Routine was comprised of four subthemes: Rituals, Group and Individual prayer, Physical Description of Prayer, and Memory and Conversational Prayer. The theme of Thankfulness had two subthemes: Ability and Performances and that of God's Will had one: Outcome. The present findings support and expand on previous research suggesting that ritualistic activity has a powerful influence on athletes, that athletes use prayer as a coping mechanism to alleviate stress, and that athletes differ with respect to the specific prayer style they prefer to use. The study concludes with recommendations for coaches and sport psychology consultants, and for researchers interested in using phenomenological methodology to gain a greater understanding of the meaning of sport behavior for participants.
