요약 : Research suggests that intimate partner abuse is more likely to occur among African Americans than within any other race. However, there have been few empirically valid and reliable studies on the treatment efficacy. A lack of theory and research specific to African-American male batterers has limited the ability of social service professionals to effectively devise, implement and evaluate group interventions that are responsive to the unique sociocultural strengths and needs of the males. Treatment outcomes for African-American male batterers may be enhanced if the battering is not isolated from the psychological and social realities associated with many African-American males such as identity, black masculinity, utilization of informal support networks, racial/cultural differences in help seeking behavior, institutional discrimination, and spirituality. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore African-American male batterers' perceptions of domestic violence treatment program effectiveness, barriers to treatment, factors to enhance treatment, and buffers to violence. This qualitative study used a case study format to interview eight African-American males who successfully completed a domestic violence treatment program. Content analysis of the interviews was utilized to identify similar and significant patterns of responses. During the interviews, the following relevant themes emerged: (a) Concepts of and Interactions with Women, (b) Personal Strengths, (c) Spirituality, (d) Group Process, (e) Anger, Rage and Violence and (f) Cultural Characteristics of Domestic Violence among African American Males. Many of the males' experiences led them to believe that a part of the socialization of African-American men is to teach them to react with aggression. To address the myriad of issues surrounding group treatment with African-American male batterers, it is imperative that practitioners integrate aspects such as culture, identity, spirituality, and discrimination into the treatment. The participant's responses confirmed research suppositions that treatment programs for African-American male batterers should be based on the socialization, values, structural experiences/barriers and environmental pressures to which they have been exposed. Finally, it appears that a culturally sensitive, strengths based group model of treatment holds excellent promise for social service professionals in regards to enhancing practice courses in the social work curriculum, increased opportunities for grants for expanded research, vital information for trainings, as well as positively impacting the continuum of effects related to the African-American male batterer's relationships.
