요약 : Chapter one articulates the issues that animate the dissertation and justifies the timeliness of this project. Chapter two presents the central features of Balthasar's and Lonergan's theological approaches, attending to Balthasar's stress on drama and Lonergan's stress on theory. To make the comparison more fruitful, this chapter also reprises Lonergan's understanding of the aesthetic and dramatic patterns of experience and illuminates this through his methodological reflections on art. Chapters three through six articulate the respective positions of both thinkers on Christ's consciousness and knowledge in general and in his experience of the Cross. Chapter seven explores the possible complementarity of their positions in relation to seven key themes: (1) the precision of terms; (2) the inadequacy of vision; (3) the centrality of Christ's mission; (4) Christ's human consciousness within a human and historical life; (5) the trinitarian context of Christ's consciousness and knowledge; (6) Christ's vicarious suffering and death; and (7) the use of mystical resources.

요약 : The dialectical part of this dissertation concludes that Lonergan's explanatory approach was more helpful in achieving an imperfect and speculative understanding of this mystery of faith, The use of a natural analogy for understanding Christ's consciousness and knowledge provided a more precise and clear hypothetical understanding of the mystery of the person of Christ, Hence, the dissertation affirms that the principal function of systematic theology is to achieve an understanding of the mysteries of faith through (1) natural analogy; (2) an analogy of faith; and (3) the interconnection of the mysteries with the human person's final end. It also acknowledges that an aesthetic-dramatic operator underpins the theologian as he or she attempts to understand the permanently inexhaustible mysteries of faith. These mysteries are often revealed first in dramatic terms. Hence, the dissertation asks whether dramatic categories may have a subalternate place in systematic-theological discourse, and challenges theology systematically to integrate these primary and secondary modes of understanding and expression, even though explanatory understanding has a guiding priority. Meeting this challenge is beyond the scope of the dissertation.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation explores the respective systematic theologies of Hans Urs von Balthasar and Bernard Lonergan. The primary methodological question of this dissertation is: Can both dramatic and theoretical categories complement each other to deepen our theological understanding of the mysteries of faith? In order to answer this question, this dissertation explores an issue in systematic theology and attends to the respective approaches of Lonergan and Balthasar. The primary theological question is: What are the implications of Christ's consciousness and knowledge in general for his experience of the Cross?
