요약 : Finally, in chapters 5 and 6, it is demonstrated that the identity interpretation accommodates the relevant OT and NT texts that refer to the image of God and human identity, on the one hand, and the formative theological insights of the Christian tradition, on the other. Interpreting the image of God as human identity provides the requisite conceptual context for the realization and fulfillment of human identity described in the NT, thus linking the OT development of human identity to its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Also accommodated are the traditional insights regarding humanity's dependence upon God for its identity and the developmental realization of the imago dei..

요약 : In chapters 1 and 2, the need for a canonical re-reading of the imago dei is demonstrated through a survey of several contemporary interpretations of the imago dei and a careful analysis of the classic interpretations offered by Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth. It is shown that, theologically and exegetically, interpreters have had difficulty incorporating the full range of relevant OT and NT texts and explicating the dogmatic links between the image of God in creation and the image of God in Christ.

요약 : The challenge to offer a compelling alternative interpretation is taken up in chapters 3 and 4, in which a conceptual and exegetical basis for the identity interpretation is established through an analysis of the term "identity," a reading of Genesis 1 in its theological and cultural contexts, and an exploration of the dogmatic relationship between the doctrine of revelation, human identity, and the imitation of God. It is concluded that humans are identified as God's representatives within the creation order and intended to make God known in the world through analogous ways of being-in-the-world.

요약 : The imago dei continues to receive abundant attention in the theological literature. Nevertheless, generally there are only three ways of interpreting its meaning: imago dei as human substance, functions, or relations. This study offers exegetical and dogmatic arguments for a fourth possibility: imago dei as human identity. The identity interpretation is shown to be dogmatically coherent and faithful to the range of relevant canonical texts.
