■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  investigates  the  ubiquity  of  angels  in  the  medieval  church  and  assesses  their  significance  through  a  detailed  study  of  the  angelology  of  Saint  Bonaventure.  The  first  section,  "Bonaventure  the  Scholastic,"  examines  the  church's  traditional  teachings  about  angels  through  a  study  of  Bonaventure's  exegetical  and  scholastic  treatises.  The  second  section,  "Bonaventure  the  Franciscan,"  investigates  the  relationships  between  Franciscans  and  the  angels  (particularly  the  angels  of  the  Apocalypse).  The  third  section,  "Bonaventure  the  Preacher,"  surveys  the  full  range  of  diverse  medieval  religious  experiences  from  baptism  through  funerary  practices  and  examines  how  angels  and  these  devotional  practices  inform  each  other.  This  dissertation  reveals  the  ways  in  which  sacraments,  pilgrimages,  metaphysics,  ecclesiology,  liturgies,  and  even  the  building  of  the  cathedrals  all  became  interwoven  with  angelology.  By  using  the  writings  of  Bonaventure  to  portray  the  multifaceted  ways  in  which  doctrines  about  angels  affected  medieval  Christianity  and  vice  versa,  this  dissertation  offers  a  picture  of  the  unappreciated  complexity  and  significance  of  angels  in  the  medieval  church.
