■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  a  thematic,  cross-confessional  study  of  the  writings  produced  Scottish  religious  exiles  in  the  second  half  of  the  sixteenth  century.  This  research  brings  to  light  the  shared  methods  by  which  Catholics  and  Protestants  coped  with  the  conditions  of  exile  on  the  continent,  admonished  and  rebuked  the  regimes  of  their  homeland,  fashioned  theories  of  political  resistance  and  created  identities  of  self  in  opposition  to  a  perceived  otherness.  It  is  demonstrated  that,  despite  their  adversarial  relationship,  these  Catholic  and  Protestant  exiles  developed  a  common  religio-political  discourse  through  a  process  of  borrowing,  imitation  and  exchange.  This  dissertation  also  challenges  historical  approaches  that  treat  the  political  ideas  of  these  exiles  in  essentially  pragmatic  and  secular  terms.  It  is  argued  that  their  political  thinking  must  be  understood  as  an  ancillary  by-product  of  a  distinctive  religious  worldview  that  was  developed  in  the  context  of  exile.
