■520    ▼aChapter  two  offers  a  definition  of  Puritan  family  worship  to  distinguish  it  from  today's  more  liberal-minded  positions.  The  third  chapter  uncovers  the  greater  social  and  cultural  context  of  the  Puritan  home.  Those  factors  from  society  and  culture  which  impacted  Puritan  family  worship  are  set  forth.  The  following  chapter  discusses  the  theological  context  in  which  Puritan  family  worship  was  given  expression.  Calvinism,  worship  theology,  and  family  ideology  in  Puritan  thought  are  surveyed  to  gain  understanding  into  the  theological  nuances  of  Puritan  family  worship.
■520    ▼aPuritan  expositors  held  family  in  the  highest  regard.  Household  manuals,  written  to  instruct  families  as  to  their  duties  before  God,  were  common  in  Puritan  times.  Puritan  pastors  also  upheld  worship  as  the  supreme  duty  of  every  Christian.  The  present  work  explores  the  merger  of  family  and  worship  in  Puritan  theology  in  the  doctrine  of  family  worship.  The  need  and  usefulness  of  the  study  opens  the  work  at  hand,  establishing  the  motives  and  purposes  for  presenting  Puritan  family  worship  to  contemporary  Christendom.
■520    ▼aThe  fifth  chapter  introduces  the  primary  grounds  employed  by  Puritans  to  advance  family  worship,  namely,  the  biblical  grounds.  Puritan  interpretations  of  various  scriptural  passages  from  both  Testaments  are  set  forth  Chapters  six  and  seven  continue  the  progression  of  the  Puritan  argument  by  advancing  the  secondary  theological  grounds  and  the  practical  outworking  of  Puritan  family  worship.  Motivations,  rooted  in  sound  theological  reasoning,  and  details  as  to  the  implementation  of  Puritan  family  religion  are  spelled  out.  The  eighth  chapter  presents  a  snapshot  of  family  worship  from  modern  proponents  in  the  Puritan  lineage.  Similarities  and  differences  are  given  alongside  suggestions  for  further  research  and  development.  Finally,  the  work  concludes  with  appropriate  summaries  and  reflections  on  the  doctrine  of  family  worship  in  Puritan  thought.
