요약 : In this dissertation, I argue that Herbert's speaker experiences the transition from the Old to the New Covenant, and that this transition, while usually the fount of joy and wonder can also be a source of spiritual bewilderment and affliction. Calvin---whose theology of the covenant informs my argument understands this transition as one from childhood to maturity, from a time of dependence on earthly, tangible blessings (the Land of Canaan, for example) and "little external [ceremonial] observances," to a direct and spiritual knowledge in Christ. As I show in my first chapter, the laying aside of the old helps is an ever-present trial of faith. Christ, the embodiment of the New Covenant, I argue in the second chapter, is the speaker's friend who cannot be an external help as was the Law, but must take up, as his temple, the speaker's heart, which must be broken before it can be healed. Furthermore, in the third chapter, I argue that the Psalmist, one who experienced many of the difficulties of the New Covenant prematurely, becomes a model for the speaker of one who lives by faith in the Promise of the covenant and prays on the basis of the covenant. Finally, in the last chapter, I argue that the speaker must reckon the value of this world in the face of the perfect heavenly inheritance that he has in Christ. He must be detached from the world, even holding it in contempt, while still embracing its pleasures as gifts to be used in moderation. My study of The Temple builds on the works of Barbara Lewalski, Richard Strier, Chana Bloch, Lisa Gordis, Gene Veith, and Daniel Doerksen. The problems that I address, related to covenant theology and Herbert, are often ones that have been generated by Richard Strier, who forcefully and compellingly denies that Herbert is a covenant theologian, that he countenances a theology of friendship with God, or that he shares with Renaissance humanists a delight in this world.
