요약 : Christian ethicists generally rely on an implicit theory of divine revelation, assuming that God maintains a certain level of interest in human affairs. For example, moral theologians who work under a principle-based theory of ethics might regard general rules and principles as revealed truth for humanity, interpreting and applying the written word to particular circumstances. Other ethicists, with an eye toward human transformation, might assume a more active and intimate role for God in redirecting individual gazes to the salient features of a situation. By shedding light on Christian ethicists' underlying assumptions about divine revelation, this dissertation explores how religious Americans perceive ethical responsibility, especially regarding the possibility of justifying evil for the common good. The issue of torture in the war against terror is used as a test case for defining a more explicit theory of revelation that is compatible with citizenship in a liberal democracy. After employing sociological analysis as a way of grounding theological reflection in the concrete reality of praxis, this study uses the work of Martin Buber, Karl Barth, and H. Richard Niebuhr to construct a "rhetorical theology" of revelation that is informed by the seductive inducements to torture in the modern era. This theology of revelation includes four basic elements: (1) a focus on God's concern for concrete particularity or the present realities of human existence; (2) the conviction that God's persuasive work takes place in an ongoing process of dialogue; (3) the ideal of continuity between divine revelation and proclamation; and (4) a belief that God may employ rhetorical strategies that stimulate interpersonal dialogue and promote the development of civic virtues. As a contribution to the ongoing debate over whether torture can ever be justified as a lesser evil, the study makes a case for the relevance of revelation theology in identifying and correcting moral blind spots regarding the issue.
