요약 : This dissertation examines widespread participation in and responses to publicized miracles in eighteenth-century France. The expansion of print and literacy, combined with a series of highly publicized religious scandals, presented a swell of evidence for and against the authenticity of particular miracles and miracle-working relics to individuals from a wide range of social backgrounds. The exchange of ideas had a major impact on lay religious sensibilities, but it was specifically the spread of competing and contradictory ideas that was most definitive in shaping not only what people believed, but more importantly, whom they believed, and how they came to believe. Contradictory evidence from competing authorities forced people to decide which external authorities---Church historians, witnesses to miracles, medical experts, etc.---were reliable. This dissertation argues that the process of weighing evidence and choosing which external authority to believe engendered personal autonomy and a self-fashioning of religious beliefs.
초록/해제
요약 : This study contributes to three major strands in the history of eighteenth-century France. First, it contributes to an ongoing discussion regarding the relationship between religion and the Enlightenment by examining the impact that debates between Catholics, and between Catholics and non-believers, had upon the larger population. Second, it furthers our understanding of the relationship between the exchange of ideas, social change, and shifts in lay religious beliefs and practices. Instead of examining the impact of secular or skeptical ideas on lay views of religion, it stresses the importance of exposure to competing and contradictory ideas, which fostered a shift away from blind acceptance of religious truths by allowing people to reconstruct their own religious beliefs in light of presented evidence. Finally, it expands our understanding of the impact of religious controversy in Enlightenment France. Viewing the Enlightenment as a series of interconnected debates that impacted people of various social levels fosters an understanding of how religious controversy impacted the wider population. While scholars have often examined the tensions, interactions, and overlap between religion and Enlightenment, as well as faith and reason, this study reveals the extent to which tensions between religious authority and intellectual autonomy drove Enlightenment-era controversies over miracles.
