■520    ▼aThe  aim  of  this  dissertation  is  to  critique  the  current  Arminian  perspectives  on  the  perseverance  of  the  saints.  Two  Arminian  authors  were  chosen  as  representative  thinkers.  The  first  is  I.  Howard  Marshall  and  the  second  is  Robert  Shank.
■520    ▼aThe  first  chapter  includes  a  historical  survey  of  this  doctrine.  This  doctrine  is  examined  in  the  writings  of  the  early  fathers,  and  continues  through  history  to  the  modern  era.  It  includes  a  survey  of  the  positions  of  Augustine,  Calvin  and  Luther.
■520    ▼aThe  method  of  this  dissertation  is  primarily  the  discipline  of  systematic  theology  as  it  is  defined  by  Lewis  Sperry  Chafer.  However,  in  order  to  assure  thoroughness,  the  dissertation  also  incorporates  the  relevant  data  from  other  theological  disciplines.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  is  a  theological  defense  of  the  doctrine  of  perseverance  of  the  saints.  The  material  is  organized  much  like  Chafer's  classical  defense.  It  relates  this  doctrine  to  the  work  of  the  entire  trinity.
■520    ▼aThen  there  is  a  critique  of  the  theological  presuppositions  of  the  Arminians.  Two  doctrines  which  are  especially  examined  from  their  perspective  are  election  and  justification  by  faith.  Two  alternative  theological  models  are  presented  as  more  consistent  than  the  Arminian  model.
